Scholarships and Bursaries

The Province of Manitoba in 2006 introduced a five-year program to match new scholarship or bursary funds established within Manitoba Community Foundations to a maximum of $100,000 per year.

Several funds have been established by our Community Foundation under this initiative to assist students pursuing higher levels of education.

Cherban Endowment Post-Secondary Scholarship

The Cherban Post-Secondary Scholarship was created and awarded for the first time in 2019. The fund originated due
to a generous donation from the Department of Agriculture and the Estate of Alexander and Marvin Cherban. The
Cherban’s were twin brothers who farmed for many years in the Birch River-Lenswood area. It was their wish that the
proceeds from their estate would foster and promote the advancement of agricultural excellence in the Swan River
Valley. The interest from this fund will assist students pursuing studies in the field of agricultural related programs for
years to come.

“Jud” Scales Memorial Pharmacy Award

Jud was a community pharmacist for 50 years. He graduated from the U of M Faculty
of Pharmacy in 1963. He went to work in his family’s drugstore, Scales Drug Store,
alongside his Uncle Earle Scales (pharmacist) and his mother Doris Scales, (RN) having
lost his father when he was 16 years old. Jud and his cousin Terry (pharmacist)
purchased the drugstore in 1981.
Jud loved serving his community and there wasn’t anything he would not do for his
customers regardless of the time of day or day of week. He spent much time going
down to the drugstore in the middle of the night or on a Sunday to fill prescriptions.
In recognition of this unwavering dedication he received the Bowl of Hygeia Award in
2001.
Jud also served his community as a town councilor and as deputy mayor for the Town of Swan River for nearly 14 years.
He also worked on economic development with his friend Kelly Neely on such projects as the Natural Gas Committee
and Louisiana Pacific OSB board plant that helped bring them to the Valley.

Dr. Rex & Beverley Leach Animal Health Scholarship

The Dr. Rex and Beverley Leach Animal Health Scholarship Fund was awarded for the first time in 2005. It was
established by Dr. Leach to encourage and aid local students in their pursuit of a career in the animal health field.
Rex graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon in April 1970. He practiced in Shoal Lake, MB until
he moved his family to Swan River in October 1971. Initially, the practice was located in the family home until it was
moved to a new government clinic in 1976. There it continued to grow to become a three-person practice. Rex
remained very involved until his death in 2009, just as he began to consider retirement. A loving husband and father,
Rex was truly devoted to the veterinary profession, the clients and animals he served. He passed this enthusiasm on to
the many students he mentored through the years. It was his wish that local students in particular, would have the
opportunity to train and perhaps, return to the Swan Valley.
Rex was also very community minded and was very involved in minor hockey, 4H Horse Club, the Agriculture Society
and the ski trail but his consuming passion, other than veterinary medicine, was the establishment of the Community
Foundation of Swan Valley. He was a founding member and he had the satisfaction of knowing that it was thriving and
growing. It was his wish that the interest from the fund be personally established, would assist students in the field of
animal related programs for years to come.
